Chapter twenty-one

I Create a Clever Chapter Heading that Draws ALL the Attention!

The conversation with a certain man in the Guardians put a spring in my step. Maybe I wasn’t nearly as optimistic as Paldric, but today, when he smiled at me, it was easier to smile back. Which then my body reminded me of my still healing fat lip, so I stopped smiling, but Paldric got the picture.

Despite my good mood, I still felt exhausted from my late chat with Guardian guy. My cup of water rested in my palms, and I contemplated how much percentage it would take to change it into a steaming cup of coffee. I failed to develop coffee in this world. Why I didn’t add it to my story was an oversight on my part. I didn’t have my phone to look it up, but I was pretty sure coffee already existed in the medieval period.

“The longer you think about it, the more the percentage will spike once you give in,” Milla said.

I tore my gaze from my water. “Sorry?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Just thought I’d say that.”

The frown tugged at my healing lip again, but I considered what she said. “So if I stew about it days before changing my water into coffee, my percentage will get hit harder than if I change it now?”

She gave a look of genuine confusion, then realization crossed her face. “If you casually change it to coffee, it might not be as big of a spike, but it’s still a tick. You’ll be in danger of excusing your actions, and will reach forty percent again before you know it.”

I sighed, draining the last of my water. “So, it’s easier to… not?”

Milla shrugged. “You know better than I do.”

“Where am I at, anyway?”

“Thirty percent. Good job.” She patted my arm. She didn’t understand why, but she hoped it made me feel better.

“Thanks.” I patted her hand back.

“What’s coffee?” she asked before taking a large bite of oatmeal.

I rubbed my head. “Something I’m seriously considering might be worth half a percent right now.”

We finished and left the inn. We stepped outside to see Alwin teaching Tara the sword, and I raised an eyebrow.

Paldric walked up to us. “Are we ready to go?”

Their fight captivated me. “Whenever they are.” Alwin went slowly with Tara. He held his sword with one hand while Tara held hers with both. It looked heavy. She noticed me and Milla and the sword tip touched the ground.

“Thanks, Alwin. May we practice more tomorrow morning?” She handed the sword back to him.

“Of course!” Alwin sheathed his two swords. “I can’t promise you’ll be a master swordswoman, but it should be enough to keep you protected.”

Tara nodded, rubbing her arm.

I approached her. “Learning the sword?”

She looked at me, and her smile dropped. “Yes. I asked Alwin to help me learn, since we’re tracking a group of cursed creatures with a necromancer as their leader.”

Paldric’s eyes bore a hole into my skull as I nodded. “That’s smart. And proactive.
